Vector Control District to Conduct Treatments to Eradicate Aggressive, Non-Native Mosquitoes in East San José
We will be conducting a series of wide area larvicide spraying (WALS) treatments to eradicate the aggressive Aedes aegypti mosquito, before it can establish a permanent population in our county.
The series of treatments will take place in the affected neighborhood in East San José surrounding Machado Lane. We have not been able to eliminate the mosquitoes using our first level of response, which includes applying larvicide with backpack sprayers to potential sources of mosquito habitat on private properties, with assistance from residents.
WALS treatments are necessary to protect public health from an invasive species that is capable of spreading the viruses that cause Zika, dengue fever, yellow fever and chikungunya. If Aedes aegypti gains a foothold in Santa Clara County, it would negatively affect our quality of life. WALS treatments will allow us to target cryptic sources of stagnant water that we have not been able to access.
