Request free mosquitofish

We provide free mosquitofish to all County of Santa Clara residents and businesses for placement in artificial bodies of water such as:  

• Ornamental ponds 
• Unmaintained swimming pools/ jacuzzi 
• Watering troughs 
• Fountains 
• Rain barrels

When submitting your mosquitofish request, please indicate the following: 

• Where fish will be housed (pond, pool, trough, rain barrel, etc.). 
• Estimated surface area (length, width, and depth) of location where fish will be housed. 
• If you will be able to provide a 5-gallon bucket or access to your backyard for the delivery.

Preparation 

Treat tap water with water conditioner to remove chlorine, chloramines, and ammonia. The conditioner can be purchased at your local pet store. 

Maintenance 

• Mosquitofish prefer sunlit areas to shady areas. 
• Providing large rocks or shelter will protect them from opossums and raccoons. 
• They may need limited feeding in the winter when mosquito larvae are scarce.
