The most cost effective and efficient method of controlling mosquito populations is through larval control. Larval control is preventing mosquito larvae from becoming flying adult mosquitoes. We focus a majority of our mosquito abatement resources into public education, identification, and control of local aquatic habitats.
The District, the Public Health Department, and the Board of Supervisors have carefully weighed the risks and benefits of adult-mosquito-control treatments (AMTs). The Federal and California Environmental Protection Agencies, scientific literature, decades of Ultra Low Volume (ULV) treatments used across the country, and treatment operations in the County of Santa Clara since 2005 all attest to the safety and effectiveness of ULV treatments.
We use truck-mounted equipment that travel down the street releasing a very fine mist of the pesticide product. We ensure that our equipment is delivering the proper droplet size by using a process called calibration, and the output of the truck-mounted treatment equipment is regulated by radar signals detecting the speed of the truck.
The products we currently use in our adult-mosquito-control treatments are Zenivex® E4 and Merus™ 3.0. Both are approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in public areas. The EPA provides strict instructions for the usage of Zenivex® and Merus™ and any deviation from these instructions violates federal law.
The County operates in compliance with these instructions, and also submits to inspection by the California Department of Health Services and the local Agricultural Commissioner’s Office. More information on the EPA’s evaluation of Zenivex® and Merus™.
ULV treatment for adult mosquitoes reduces the risk of human West Nile virus infections when used as a part of an overall Integrated Pest Management program. If the County did not treat when infected mosquitoes are found, cases of West Nile Virus could become more prevalent in the County of Santa Clara and cause significant health problems for those who get a symptomatic infection. To get a sense of how significant these problems can be, take a look at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) video on West Nile Virus.
